Burnaby FC’s Buchanan Signs with Vancouver FC

Burnaby FC today announced Joey Buchanan, 16, has signed a Development Contract ahead of the 2024 Canadian Premier League (CPL) season with Vancouver FC. Buchanan joins Vancouver FC after participating in the club’s 2024 open trials which were held last month.

In signing a Development Contract, Buchanan is eligible to train full time with Vancouver and may appear in up to three CPL games, while maintaining his amateur status and place on Burnaby FC’s roster. Buchanan is eligible to sign two development contracts in a single CPL season.

“Joey has been an integral part of our club since his intake year, consistently demonstrating exceptional talent, character, and leadership qualities,” said Burnaby FC Technical Director – High Performance Lee Tregonning. “Not only is Joey a phenomenal player on the field, but he is also a remarkable individual off the field. He exemplifies the values of our club and comes from a wonderful family background. It has been a privilege to witness Joey’s growth and development over the years, and we are incredibly proud of his achievements.”

Buchanan was a member of BFC’s 2006 BCSPL team which won gold at the 2023 U17 National Championships. Buchanan will finish his BCSPL season with BFC and will also play this season with Burnaby FC League1 BC whose home opener is April 28 vs Harbourfront FC at 3:30 pm at Burnaby Lake West Field 5. The opening game will feature the Burnaby FC League1 women’s team playing Harbourfront at 1:00 pm.
