Burnaby FC Sweep Boys and Girls Under-17 National Championships

Burnaby, B.C. (October 10, 2023) – Burnaby FC 2006 boys’ and girls’ teams won Gold today at the Canada Soccer Toyota Under-17 National Championships in Moncton, New Brunswick.

Both BFC teams went undefeated in the competition with a combined record of 10-0.

“This is an incredible achievement for our Club in its inaugural season, by a tremendous group of players,” said Burnaby FC Technical Director – High Performance Lee Tregonning. “This is down to the hard work over several years of many dedicated and committed people who trusted in the development process and now see the outcome and we are thrilled to be bringing home two trophies.”

Kat Tomic led the girls to the National title in her first season as 2006 girls head coach: “I cannot express how proud I am of a team that demonstrated, unity, fight, and tenacity today (Monday). The grit showed in today’s performance proved to everyone watching what is means not to quit and always to keep going.” The girls qualified for Nationals by winning the Provincial Cup in June, under head coach Rob Giezen and assistant coach Nick Boyd. The team has been managed for several years by Nicoletta and Lino Santoianni.

Todd May is also in his first season as head coach after taking over from Nicho Agnolino (who guided the 2006 boys’ team to a Provincial Cup in June before joining the Vancouver Whitecaps): “We came into the tournament with our own expectations, reminding ourselves to be humble and respectful of every opponent. Together we were all completely prepared, focused and hungry to win the competition.” Assistant coach Sam Boppart has been with team for five years, as well as managers Heidi George and Marnie Town.
